About
From YouTuber to bubblegum pop princess, Poppy’s latest incarnation sees her stand a consummate metal head
With the receipts to back her up, Poppy’s somewhat unlikely pivot to heavy metal has earned her two Grammy nominations (making her the first solo female ever recognised in that category) and tour slots alongside some of the genre’s biggest names.
Emerging from the surreal world of YouTube ‘performance art’, Poppy (born Moriah Rose Pereira) turned internet intrigue into a fully fledged music career defined by creative reinvention. Her early sugar-coated pop anthems and uncanny digital persona captivated audiences worldwide, setting her apart as one of the most inventive voices of the late-2010s online era. Her debut album, Poppy.Computer (2017) introduced her as a pastel-hued pop avatar, while the follow-up Am I A Girl? (2018) moved into more adventurous territory, featuring a standout synth-pop collaboration with Grimes, entitled ‘Play Destroy’. (Opens in new tab)
In a bold and unexpected move, Poppy turned full-tilt into heavier territory with her third album I Disagree (2020). Melding pop hooks with crushing guitars and industrial textures, its single ‘Bloodmoney’ earned her a historic nomination for Best Metal Performance at the 63rd Grammy Awards. (Opens in new tab)This marked a major turning point for Poppy being taken seriously as a newcomer to the genre, further affirmed by high-profile collaborations with Bad Omens, BABYMETAL, and Knocked Loose, the latter of whose track ‘Suffocate’ earned Poppy a second nomination for Best Metal Performance at the 67th Grammy Awards.
Live, Poppy has established herself as an electrifying performer, commanding the stage whether performing on late-night television or headlining arena tours. With nods to her pop era, high-impact visuals and avant-garde costumes have remained at the fore of her stagecraft. Supporting rock and metal heavyweights, Poppy has accompanied the likes of Thirty Seconds to Mars, Evanescence and Avenged Sevenfold on the road, and appeared alongside Knocked Loose on Jimmy Kimmel Live! to perform ‘Suffocate’. Credited as a rare instance of hardcore music on a popular late-night talk show, Poppy told Kerrang, “putting heavy music on a stage like that in a place that’s usually where the pop stars go is important.”
Her sixth studio record Negative Spaces arrived at the end of 2024. Produced by Jordan Fish of Bring Me the Horizon, the album sees Poppy unleash lead singles ‘New Way Out’ and ‘They’re All Around Us’, showcasing her signature flair for bone-crushing metal mixed with arena-worthy pop hooks and industrial soundscapes.
