Mario Biondi Celebrates 20 Years of Soul-Jazz Magic – Live at Kaufleuten Zurich

His voice is warm, sensual, and unmistakable – rich in depth and character. Mario Biondi, born Mario Ranno, discovered his passion for music at an early age alongside his father, singer Stefano Biondi, whose stage name he later adopted as a tribute. Over the years, a wide range of influences and experiences have shaped him into the extraordinary artist he is today.

It has now been twenty years since Biondi’s distinctive baritone first captivated audiences around the world with his breakout single “This Is What You Are” – a song that has since become a modern soul-jazz classic. To mark this milestone, he released a brand-new version, “This Is What You Are (20th Anniversary)”, on September 12, featuring a lineup of acclaimed international jazz musicians. In 2026, the celebration continues with a major anniversary tour. Swiss fans can look forward to experiencing Mario Biondi live at Kaufleuten Zurich on March 8, 2026.

The story of “This Is What You Are” began in 2004, when the song was first released under the pseudonym Wes-a-Bee to introduce Biondi to the Japanese market. A few months later, British DJ Norman Jay discovered the track and featured it on his BBC playlists – a turning point that launched Biondi’s international career. In 2005, he achieved widespread success in the UK and Italy, and a year later, a re-recorded version with the High Five Quintet cemented his reputation on the global jazz scene.

Since then, Mario Biondi has released twelve albums, earned numerous awards, and performed over 120 concerts in 25 countries with his “Crooning Undercover” project. In 2025, he reached another impressive milestone – having performed live in 50 countries worldwide, a testament to his lasting artistry and magnetic presence.

Getting there

The Kaufleuten Klubsaal is located about 6 minutes from Zurich Central Station.

The easiest way to get there is to take tram lines 6, 7, 11, or 13 to the Rennweg stop.

From there, it is about a 4-minute walk to Kaufleuten.

Kaufleuten is located in the heart of Zurich, just a few minutes from the main train station.

We recommend arriving via Sihlstrasse or Talstrasse.

There are several parking garages in the immediate vicinity, including the Talgarten, Gessnerallee, and Jelmoli parking garages - all just a few minutes' walk from the Kaufleuten Klubsaal.

Accessibility

Information for guests with a handicap

Kaufleuten is largely wheelchair accessible.

For concerts, we recommend purchasing a standing room ticket for both the person concerned and their companion, and for seated events, a parterre seat ticket.

We ask all guests in wheelchairs to contact us by email at kultur@kaufleuten.ch about a week before the event so that we can arrange for someone to accompany them to their seat on the day of the event.
