John Legend ist ein Ausnahmetalent und wird entsprechend mit Auszeichnungen überhäuft: mehrere Grammys hat der als John Roger Stephens geborene Sänger bereits abgeräumt sowie einen Oscar für den besten Film-Song.

Musik hat John Legends Leben von früh an geprägt. Am 28. Dezember 1978 in eine sehr musikalischen Familie geboren, wird er alsbald Mitglied des Gospel-Chors der Kirchengemeinde seiner Heimatstadt Springfield. Er studiert Englisch an der "University of Pennsylvania", arbeitet nebenbei als Chorleiter und begleitet Musiker wie Common, Eve oder Britney Spears auf ihren Tourneen. Nach den Konzerten versucht er, seine erste selbst eingespielte Live-CD an die Besucher zu vertickern. 2002 lernt John Legend den aufstrebenden Musikproduzenten Kanye West kennen, der damals unter anderem mit Jay Z arbeitet. Kayne erkennt Johns Talent sofort und bietet ihm eine Zusammenarbeit an. Diese besteht zunächst darin, dass John in zahlreichen Produktionen von Kanye mitmischt, unter anderem in Alicia Keys "You Don't Know My Name". Auf den Durchbruch als Solokünstler muss er danach nicht allzulange warten: sein erstes Soloalbum “Get Lifted” erscheint 2005 und verkauft sich weltweit drei Millionen Mal.

John Legend wird als neuer Soul King gefeiert, die Presse überschlägt sich mit Lobeshymnen. Seinen bisherigen Karrierehöhepunkt feiert er bei der Oscar-Verleihung 2015, wo er gemeinsam mit dem Rapper Common für den Filmsong "Glory" aus "Selma" mit einem Oscar geehrt wird. Privat hat John Legend sein Glück bei Top-Model Chrissy Teigen gefunden. Das Paar heiratete 2013 und hat bisher eine gemeinsame Tochter Luna Simone.
