With a love of Frank Sinatra and a rich, baritone voice of his own to match, Giveon bucks the conventions of his contemporary peers, instead favouring live instrumentation and timeless storytelling that transcends modern R&B.

Giveon Dezmann Evans, known mononymously as Giveon and stylised as GIVĒON, first burst onto the scene with his feature on Drake’s ‘Chicago Freestyle’, where listeners first mistook his deep, velvety baritone for Sampha’s (a comparison he happily took as a compliment). That same year, he signed with Epic Records and released his debut EP Take Time, a critically-acclaimed project that earned a Grammy nomination and featured the breakout single ‘Heartbreak Anniversary’, now certified quintuple platinum.

Alongside early favourites such as ‘Like I Want You’, Giveon quickly established a sound rooted in classic soul and jazz-tinged warmth, championing analogue textures over the glossy production typically plumped for within the genre.

Giveon’s 2021 compilation When It’s All Said and Done… Take Time united his two early EPs and soared to No. 5 on the Billboard 200. His debut studio album, Give or Take, followed in 2022, reaffirming his mission to restore a sense of timeless sophistication to the genre, with his baritone vocals carrying a gravitas seldom heard among his contemporaries. Exploring themes of love, loss and fame through standout tracks like ‘Lost Me’ and ‘For Tonight’, the record was brought to life on his accompanying headline tour, where minimalist, soul-infused arrangements highlighted raw emotion over spectacle. 

Giveon’s most recent album, Beloved (2025), pushes his devotion to live instrumentation even further. Speaking on the genre to Rolling Stone, “I feel like it’s too digital… people need to move back to live instrumentation.” The album’s standout tracks, including ‘Twenties’ and ‘Rather Be’, weave lush strings, soulful horns, and layered background vocals over warm, organic percussion, resulting in a sound that feels both cinematic and deeply intimate. Crafted with live musicians in the studio, Beloved was conceived with the stage in mind. “I want to do strings, I want to do horns,” Giveon said, “The album was made live, so it’s made to be performed live” (Rolling Stone). 

Already a sought-after collaborator for artists such as Drake, Justin Bieber and Teddy Swims, Giveon continues to command both the studio and the stage with his signature poise and depth. His live shows have become a hallmark of his classic, deliberately unflashy artistry.
